KiVa in Action: Building a Safe and Caring School Community

Kiva Nordic

KiVa brings with it structure, evidence and accountability. It provides a research based system to prevent and address bullying through clear protocols and pedagogical tools that empower students to become active participants in creating respectful, compassionate communities. It is not merely about responding to incidents; it is about cultivating schools that refuse silence or indifference, building intentionally and collectively a culture grounded in empathy, respect and wellbeing.

During our September training with specialists from the University of Turku, Brunella (Head of EY) and I explored the key principles that make KiVa such a successful model. We examined the impact of bullying on school life, identified the roles within these dynamics and practised concrete strategies for prevention and intervention. We also explored the programme’s evaluation tools, including annual surveys that will allow us to measure school climate and make evidence-based decisions.

Beyond theory, the experience was both professionally and personally transformative. We understood that KiVa’s effectiveness relies not only on its materials but on the collective commitment to live its principles every day. During this journey, we also built meaningful connections with inspiring professionals whose warmth, wisdom and guidance made the training truly unforgettable… relationships that will undoubtedly last a lifetime.

As part of our visit, we had the opportunity to observe Finnish schools in action. Seeing their daily routines and speaking with their educators confirmed that we are on an excellent path: that the way Nordic approaches wellbeing, learning and community is aligned with the world’s best educational practices.

In this way, KiVa aligns seamlessly with the philosophy that already defines Nordic and marks the beginning of a new chapter in our story; its full implementation from the next academic year. It reinforces the fundamental pillars of our educational model  wellbeing as the foundation for learning, institutional coherence and professional growth. A safe environment, where every student feels heard and valued, fuels motivation, creativity and active participation. Moreover, KiVa unifies our practices, providing a shared language and clear procedures to address any situation.

The implementation of KiVa will begin this year with a baseline survey and internal training for teachers. From 2026, we will extend the programme to include family engagement sessions, continuous professional development and the integration of KiVa lessons across the curriculum, establishing a sustainable framework for continuous improvement in wellbeing, prevention and evidence based intervention.

Ultimately, beyond its structure and protocols, KiVa stands as a symbol of growth and maturity for a school that continues to learn, evolve and renew its commitment to a more human centred education. In this sense, KiVa strengthens our identity as a community that finds meaning in The Joy of Learning and in the shared responsibility of creating a culture of wellbeing.
